Willie,
I’d like to know if there’s any place around Clemson, Seneca, Pendleton or Central that sells real gasoline. It’s been documented that ethanol cuts fuel mileage and really becomes more expensive, but I can’t seem to find anybody that sells pure gasoline. If there is one, I’d like to know where it is.
Willie says:
Anybody know? If you do, write to Willie.
Willie,
Is it true that Wayne McCall’s first goal is to do away with Station 21 and its boss? I have heard this from several people and am just wondering if it is true?
Willie says:
Mr. McCall has made it pretty clear in several statements he has made to my sources at the paper and at public functions that he's not a big fan of the way emergency services are being handled in the county. If he plans to move immediately to eliminate the county department, he might have his hands full. First, it would take three votes, not one, to change the budget and that's how it would have to be accomplished. Second, the responsibility of the council is to set the budget and establish policy and priorities. Implementation is up to the administrator and staff. Even Willie doesn't want County Council members running the county on a daily basis! Third, considerable resources have been spent to establish what currently exists. Fourth, one could reasonably argue that, moving forward, there is a need for a "county" station. What you might look out for would be a move to change the nature of the station, not obliterate it.
Willie,
Sounds to me that the people inside the town limits of Salem are giving the mayor their okay to raise the town taxes so they can have 24-hour police protection. What do you think, Willie?
Willie says:
Town officials tell Willie’s sources there is no move afoot to increase the hours of the lone officer, Jarred Massey. When Massey is off duty, the town receives backup protection from the Oconee County Sheriff's Office.
Willie,
I’m calling about the facility at Clemson-Central Recreation Center. Since they’ve done the cleaning job, which they closed for a week to do, it is squeaky clean and no one could complain. It is lovely and the staff is wonderful. They have adult-only swim time from noon – 1:30 p.m., which means no one under 18 is there. I can’t say enough about what Joe Crosby and his staff are doing.
Willie says:
We’re gonna have to start a choir soon there are so many folks singing the rec center’s praises!
Willie,
Can you enlighten us as to the effectiveness of the everyday math that is being taught to our children in Oconee? I have asked around and found that many parents, including myself, don’t see how this is helping our children. I also personally know several educators that say the only reason they are teaching it is because SDOC requires them to. Apparently those who teach it don’t see it being effective in teaching our children math. A call to the school district office referred me back to my child’s teacher and the principal of the school. It sounds to me like they are forcing our children to learn something that is really of no value and has to be remediated year after year. Thanks for any help you can provide.
Willie says:
Oconee County School District Superintendent Mike Lucas told Willie: “The Everyday Mathematics curriculum is a very successful curriculum, and its success has been documented in the research. The reader may wish to visit www.whatworks.ed.gov which analyzes results of educational programs in use in the United States. According to the analysis, Everyday Mathematics is the only program with statistically significant positive effects on math achievement. If you look at SDOC's test scores, you'll note that mathematics is one of the strongest areas on both PACT and MAP tests. If you have questions, please contact your child's Assistant Principal for Instruction/Curriculum Coordinator to find out more.”
Willie,
I’m trying to find out about the local kudzu artists at Patina’s on Ram Cat Alley. It seems they have made stuff out of kudzu that has never been made before. I was wondering if the local paper would be doing an article for them. I’d like to find out more about them.
Willie says:
Willie thinks it’s a great thing that somebody has found a way to make something not only useful but darn pretty out of that cursed stuff! You can probably get all the questions you have answered by going to www.nancybasket.com or call her at (864) 718-8864.
Willie,
I was at a local Westminster eatery and heard the fire chief say that he did not know when they county was going to build the new firehouse. My question is if they are going to build it at all after all this overtax stuff has come out. Can you tell me what is right?
Willie says:
I'm no expert on how to build a countywide fire system so I'd be the last one to tell you what it right. What I just read in the paper is that the Westminster station appears to be in a little trouble because the economy is in the dumpster, the council has more needs than it has money and the three new councilmen haven't decided building a station in Westminster is the best idea. If I were Westminster, I wouldn't be holding my breath.
Willie,
Several months ago, a new business opened on the belt line that was forced to relinquish his property rights as far as annexation was concerned in order to get water. Duke Power Oconee Nuclear Station is and has been on Seneca City water for several years. Now a sewer line is being built to take away their sewage. My question, have they signed the necessary paperwork to be annexed when the time comes or have they been exempted? Having that complex in the city would sure generate a chunk of taxes.
Willie says:
No one does sewer for money. It's a pretty well known fact that the money to be made is in the sale of water, not the return of that water after it’s been used. Duke is no different. Duke had its own treatment facility, but it wants out of that business. It struck a deal with the city, agreeing to pay several million, to have a sewer line brought down Highway 130 to the city. Seneca is also throwing in a lot of money to complete the project, believing that, in the long run, development along the line, will more than pay for the project’s costs. After all, you can't have sewer (a loser) without water (a winner). It's also a pretty well known fact that, when it comes to water and sewer, if you build it they will come. That's the premise. Don't look for Duke to become part of the city any time soon. By the way, annexation is tied to the desire to have city water. Sewer becomes secondary to the process … at least that's Willie's understanding.
Willie,
Me and my wife sure did enjoy eating at Chili & Spuds Café. They have fine food down there, and they have the meat and three veggies. You can’t hardly believe it for a small-time restaurant. So, y’all, give it a try; y’all will really love it.
Willie says:
I’m a spuds man myself and might just do that!
Willie,
I called once (and you ran it, Willie) about Walhalla trying to control all the signs on the road, such as political signs, yard sale signs, etc., and I applaud them for that. However, I have found since the implementation of that that it is not being enforced. I spent time driving through Walhalla and not one sign, including political signs, has the permit number required on it. They make a law with good merit, but it does not have any enforcement.
Willie says:
Law enforcement has to work hand in hand with lawmakers to carry through. Let’s hope our politicians, winners and losers, hurry up and get ALL their signs off the radar.
Willie,
Has America gone so far downhill that is has lost faith in God and their own country by putting a know-nothing idiot in the White House? Can you answer that? I thank everybody for voting, but you can kiss your rights goodbye.
Willie says:
There is a huge amount of evidence that our President-elect does know something. Also that he has a higher intelligence quotient than you indicate. I am very positive that the majority of American voters that elected him would answer you that they have not lost their faith in their religion (if they profess one) or their country.
Willie,
What a wonderful facility the new Oconee County Animal Shelter will be when it opens next month. I had the displeasure of visiting the current shelter yesterday. A friend of mine rescued a black lab dog from the shelter. As we entered the “office,” the thought occurred to me what a wonderful experience it would be for customers if the animal control employees could enroll in a basic social skills class. Of the five employees in the office, I feel sure at least one of them could learn to say “hello” and smile at their customers. Thanks for your column. You do a great job for us all.
Willie says:
The folks at the animal shelter do a super important job for all of us taking care of the homeless, helpless, unloved dogs and cats looking for some love and compassion. Maybe their sadness at having to put down those poor creatures that aren’t adopted makes ’em not feel like smiling. So, folks, when we go to the new animal shelter to take a pet home with us, let’s give the animal control officer we encounter one of our own smiles. They don’t cost a thing, come in unlimited supply and are likely to attach themselves to the face of the recipient.

Any of you parents with children in Oconee middle or high schools read the new Behavior Code (Adopted June 2008)? I found several concerns and errors. These are the codes are children are expected to live by.... I'd think it'd be important to get it right. Anyone else see any problems with it?

I read one of the comments to Willie several times to make sure I read it right. Sure enough, some guy with apparently NOTHING to do to occupy his time actually spent time riding through Walhalla checking who knows how many signs for permit numbers. He mentioned "not one sign", so (Heaven help him) he must have checked them all, including yard sale signs. What a pitiful existence this guy must have. Why not spend that idle time volunteering instead with one of the civic groups' roadside trash pickup efforts? I'd rather have our law enforcement officers working on real crimes, not being sign cops.

MyTake, thanks for the good words yesterday. See I have an investigative nature and grew somewhat tired of this media bully. He craves the spotlight so let’s just give it to him. He has found somewhat of a “safe house” in this column. The agency he works for won’t be as impressed as some of his cohorts have been. I think they’d frown on this sort of thing. This column tracks everything that’s written. It’s kind of like the book of life. You’re accountable for all you’ve said and done. I’m like most people, when somethingstinks, like outdated food, you just discard it into the category of trash.

Well, for a couple quick examples... 303 says (in part).. Since alcohol consumption is illegal by minors, consumption of any amount of alcohol will constitute a violation of this section. This includes being present on District/school property or at any school-sponsored event after using any amount of these substances.
I didn't know alcohol consumption is illegal by minors, or is it? My Nyquil bottle (10% alcohol) says adults (12 yrs and older). The SC Code of Regulations says... Code of Regulations 7-200.4. Person Under 21--Violation to Allow Possession and Consumption of Alcoholic Liquors, or Possession and Consumption of Beer or Wine, on Premises.
Did the writer of the schools' code not have enough room to describe the intent of the code accurately? The hard copy has at least a page and a half of empty paper. Did the writer not just redefine SC code (and at who's expense)? This is a Category III offense and... "All Category III Offenses will involve law enforcement."
I'm not advocating kids going to school drunk!! Let's be realistic. This is Behavior CODE (not guideline). Accordingly, I could give my child nyquil (or one of the many perscription meds that contain alcohol) send them to school in the morning and since they have alcohol in their system, they now get a criminal record through law enforcement.. Am I the only one who has trouble with this?
How about 309... are we redefining common words now?
Just a couple quick examples (I found several issues). Don't think the schools are applying any common sense here either, they are not, this is CODE.

I don't think that's an issue, unless your child swigged a half bottle of nyquil with the intent to get drunk and showed up at school in an inebriated state then they would never know that he took nyquil.
The only one I had a question about is at the very top, I would be very curious to know exactly what a child could do OFF school property that would interfere with the school environment.
The following regulations are designed to protect all members of the educational community in the exercising of their rights and responsibilities.
These regulations are effective during the following times and places:
•
on school grounds before, during or after school hours
•
on school grounds at any other time when the school is being used by a school group
•
off the school grounds at any school and/or school-related activity, function, or event
•
on a school bus, school vehicle, or school bus stop
•
at any time or in any place (including off school grounds and during non-school hours) where student conduct has a direct effect on the school's ability to maintain an orderly and safe learning environment
