Willie,

I just read about the mother and daughter that were harassed pretty bad at a theater. I’ve got some advice for them. I had a similar thing happen to me at a restaurant about four or five years ago. Go to the theater during the day and ask the manager who her boss is and then file a complaint.

Willie says:

Good advice in Willie’s book.

Willie,

Why in the world is the greater Oconee County Chamber making 1,000 DVDs to send to whomever is thinking about moving to Oconee County? Before long, we will be standing room only.

Willie says:

It’s called economic development. In this day and age, if you don’t keep moving you get run over.

Willie,

Please pass this on to parents and grandparents. There is a new drug in the schools, and it is a killer drug known as strawberry quick. It is a type of crystal meth going around that looks like strawberry pop rocks (the candy that sizzles and pops in your mouth). It also smells like strawberry and it is being handed out to kids in schoolyards. They are calling it strawberry meth or strawberry quick. Kids are ingesting this thinking that it is candy and being rushed off to the hospital in dire condition. It also comes in chocolate, peanut butter, cola, cherry, grape and orange. Please instruct your children not to accept candy from strangers and even not to accept candy that looks like this from a friend (who may have been given it and believed it was candy) and to take any that they may have to a teacher, principal, (parent) etc. immediately.

Willie says:

Drugs are the bane of our society, here and elsewhere. Much of the other crime we see — thefts, assaults, murders — has its roots in drugs. There seems to be no end to the insidious (that's a new word for Willie) ways drug dealers find to pump this stuff into our homes and, yes, schools. Thanks for making us aware of yet another threat. Parents, please be vigilant!

Willie,

This is in regards to the taxi driver, Arthur Roberts, who was killed in 2004. Is there anything that the Seneca Police Department can recommend the family do to get this case opened back up, maybe even hold a candlelight service for him or put pictures out? Someone out there knows something and his brother and sister need to know to find some peace. Maybe you could give me some suggestions.

Willie says:

The paper did a story last year talking about this "cold case." The police have actually kept the case open but, after this time, the leads get fewer and fewer. You're right, though, someone knows something. Anything the family can do to keep the memory of this crime fresher in people's minds would help. You never know when someone's conscience will kick in.

Willie,

I am a native of Oconee County, a citizen of Walhalla and a citizen of the U.S. I was seeing in the paper where the county was considering cutting school back to four days per week. During all the problems over the years with gas prices and the drought, every time something like this comes up, they always want to take from the taxpayers. Why do they not start with themselves and cut from the top down? Whoever does the Willies, could you please take the time to research all the county vehicles that we have that are unnecessary, I’m not referring to the cop cars, those guys put their lives on the line every day, but the other county cars that are unnecessary. If you research it, you could see how much money this county could save alone.

Willie says:

The four-day school week was being discussed in Columbia because of a big shortfall in tax funds. The state assumed more responsibility for funding schools based on sales tax revenues. Well, guess what? During a recession, people don't spend money, they don't travel, they don't stay at the beach as long. Tourism is the big gorilla in South Carolina and the state is feeling the effect of the economy. Willie doesn't think they will go to a four-day week any time soon, however. Seems they've found other places to cut our services. I passed your suggestion about the county vehicles on to the editor. He said it sounds like a good story, so stay tuned.

Willie,

One of your readers writes that we should never forget that we are in a total war against terrorism and that our children and children’s children will still be fighting this war. In plain English, Afghanistan and Iraq are only the beginning. This view is dangerous and mad. All other countries use their police to combat terrorism rather than waging war. It is small groups of people who commit acts of terrorism and not states. Italy had its Red Brigades, Spain has ETA, Germany had the Red Army Faction, the UK its disaffected Pakistanis and 20 years in Ireland. We spend as much on arms as the rest of the world combined. No country will attack us, but no country has control over its crazies. I suggest that if we behaved more like Canada, instead of having US troop contingents in some 150 countries, our terrorism problem would largely disappear, and we could concentrate on the real problems in our country.

Willie says:

Sounds good, partner, except Willie doesn’t want to be no Canuck. For one thing, I can't ice skate and those pucks are just too darn small and move too fast for me to follow. Seriously, you make some good points, but the U.S. has long been the defender of freedom around the globe. I'm not so sure any of us really want that to end.

Willie,

My husband died in 1979, and I’ve been disabled and on disability all my life. I need help and cannot find a lawyer. I’m trying to draw on his Social Security and was told I couldn’t because we weren’t married long enough (three years). I’m very disabled and really need help. Medicaid doesn’t pay for what I need. If anyone knows of an attorney or if someone could help me,

I sure would appreciate it.

Willie says:

All attorneys do a certain amount of pro bono work, but most are doing far more than they have to. That's a long shot. You might want to try and get ahold of a woman who works in Congressman Gresham Barrett's office in Anderson who specializes on dealing with Social Security and Medicare. You can reach her at 864-224-7401.

Willie,

I had an account at a local bank. I received some checks but I had to put the checks in the bank for 7 to 14 days to see if I would get the money. The next morning, I get a call from the bank stating that I was trying to pass fake checks, and I was going to be fined. I was the victim and they were treating me like I had done something. Then after I showed them the envelopes, they were still accusing me. And after charging me for the checks that took them three weeks to get off my account, they closed my account because I was a high risk. It makes me feel like I was taken by the bank. What can I do?

Willie says:

Sounds like the bank has helped you take the first step in the right direction — find another bank. Banks are pretty skittish these days and there is no law that says they have to take chances on anyone. Like it or not, you don't have many options but to take your business elsewhere.

Willie,

I read where a road was named after Sheriff James Singleton. I think it would have been more appropriate to name one of the Plez-U stores or a golf course after him. That is where he stays most of the time. It is hard to believe that there is not anyone else in this county that is interested in running for some of these elected positions. I know there are good qualified people out there. I would pay more taxes to double the salary just to get people interested.

Willie says:

Yeah, sure you would. Willie's known Sheriff Singleton since Spot was a pup. He seems to be running a pretty fine department to me. You won't find him on the golf course in the middle of the night when he gets a call to a major crime scene, or when he's had to leave his dinner on the table at the restaurant to respond to a call. Besides, if what you claim is true, he's probably being paid just right … since you're willing to double it.

Willie,

I don’t know why our government keeps bailing these banks out. It’s really frustrating to see the wealthy people in these banks spend the bailout money on expensive holidays when I have to watch hardworking people where I am employed get laid off. They not only spend the money, but sit back and laugh about the rest of us struggling from paycheck to paycheck. If our government and greedy people would stop spending our tax money like it was their personal savings account, we would not have to pay so much tax. Maybe some of the college students who need loans could get them. Maybe we would actually have that social security money so many others and I have been paying in for years. If I’m not going to have any social security money, why do they keep taking it out of my paycheck? If they really want to bail this country out, they should give us the money to pay off the actual mortgage and credit depth of every law abiding citizen that got caught in the web, the banks and creditors, spun to draw people into this mess. I’m not saying that everyone is innocent in this whole sad mess! What’s really sad is that

America is supposed to be one of the wealthiest countries in the world. There is no excuse why every person doesn’t have a roof over their head or food on their table and the health benefits they need. God gives us everything we need; it is up to us to use it the way he means for us to.

Willie says:

Amen and amen!!

Willie,

This little advertisement on the radio about calling your order in to a local restaurant and going through the drive-thru and picking it up is a big no-no. Every time I call my order in, I still have to go sit in line or wait in the lobby.

Willie says:

Next time you call, tell ’em you want to pick it up at 6 p.m. and then don’t go there until 6:30. It should be ready by then.

Willie,

School needs to stop treating the athletes so special. Students that aren’t athletes that get into trouble don’t get a second chance. So this is not right.

Willie says:

Pardon me, but I think you're all wet. Lots of students who aren't athletes get second chances. We all deserve a second chance; even you. So Willie will go on record right now as saying you get one more chance with me.

I think comments like (and I could try not to mention any names here) mountainman; go crawl back under a rock somewhere else. daltreygirl; nasty much? you have the gall to say that my opinion on your nastiness reflects badly on ME and SC somethingstinks; sore winner, pitiful attitude, Lots of rage against Christians in MyTake, huh Fred? fredatwork; Yes he/she does have a lot of rage… are Really a kin to negative labels and negative name-calling said in spite. I thought you Ken posted on spite a while back (just checking the record) Most of these comments have some fairly negative baggage attached. I think clearly not said in the spirit of good Christian values.

If I was going to post publicly to be Christian, wouldn’t I maybe be expected to display a little higher standard and maybe show some resemblance of acting like a Christian? I did some record checking as Ken suggested and there are lots of examples in recent posts of Un-Christian-like behavior. Some have even told me they are Christian in one breath and the next breath made a personal attack (usually readily distinguishable from humor), even then to go on and make their behavior more clearly stated. Again, not to mention any names somethingstinks; "MyTake has very rage-filled beliefs." That is an example fo how one would label your beliefs."Lots of rage against Christians in MyTake, huh Fred?" That was just me stating my opinion.I do apologize for any confusion I may have caused. Now I’m said to be violently angry and confused as well. As I told you stinks, no rage on my end. Opinion is one thing but hiding behind opinion to make personal attacks is something else. I think Ken might help you with this concept (just a thought fostered from my checking of the record). Isn’t this part of the very basics of Christian values? You want to come to the table and wear your Christianity on your sleeve, but turn to your brother and spit in his face (a lack of respect a kin to negative name-calling). I would think this behavior would shine an unfavorable light on Good Christians and Real Christian values. I hope some ignorant soul isn’t looking here for answers about what Christianity looks like. It’s been painted here pretty poorly by example of action through words. Hmmm…

Willie says; Drugs are the bane of our society…. But Willie, Drugs Save Lives. The problem with drugs is the same problem as with lots of other things…the abuse of. But since it was brought up as a topic for today… I think it’s Fabulous that we have a Pres.-Elect who has the cahonas (sp?) to say (the politically incorrect) something to the extent of….. Yes I Inhaled, otherwise what would be the point. Hopefully he will pardon the masses of Non-Violent Recreational Users (NVRU) sitting in our jails on the likes of mandatory minimums, let them get back to society (make their own living instead of tax-paid) and make room for the REAL criminals. Repeal the marijuana law. Take the profits (made every day) away from the thugs and terrorists. This will make it more affordable for the masses of NVRU. Grow it in our back yards (I hear the plant itself is one of the most efficient at cleaning the air we breathe). Sell it next to liquor with a Nice Tax. If I had to (let’s say) choose a risk, maybe passing another driver who recently… smoked a few joints or drank a few beers, the driver that consumed the smoke from the marijuana would be my choice every time. Any thoughts?

WOW Lipstick, what a GREAT idea,
A plus for our justice system
A plus for the large percent of as you put it NVRU sitting in jail
A plus to take the large profit from the thugs and terrorists
    A plus for our environment
A plus not to continually build more & bigger tax-built jails
A plus to not provide a tax-paid existence of the NVRU
A plus to our economy and society
Hmm…. What about the gateway thing, I don’t believe that it always (or even often) leads to other drugs and crimes either, It didn’t for our new president now did it?
    GREAT comment Lipstick!

To the person writing about the war on terrorism:

You fail to mention the fact that al qaeda declared war on on the West and is being supported in it's war by nation states such as Iran. The various law enforcement agencies in the U.S. are involved in this war and their efforts have probably helped to prevent a recurrence of 9/11 events. This war against terrorism may very well continue far into the future and could involve our grandchildren. I wish there was no war but since there is I prefer it to be fought somewhere outside our country, such as in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I think "having troops in 150 countries" is something of a stretch. We do have military contingents in a number of countries but very few are involved in fighting terrorism. Excepting Iraq and Afghanistan, the bulk of our military are in foreign countries to act as a deterrent to aggression by another country: Germany and Great Britain - troops are there as a carryover from the Cold War to deter aggression by Russia; Italy - the same; South Korea - to deter aggression by North Korea; Japan (including Okinawa) - to deter aggression by China and North Korea. These are the major deployments. There are smaller U.S. military contingents in other countries to provide military training to host country forces but I seriously doubt the total number would come close to 150.

Terrorism is too large and too widespread to counter with only with our internal police agencies. And since you mentioned Canada, please keep in mind that the there are Canadian military forces fighting in Afghanistan.

Lipstick, just so you will understand, it makes no difference whether taking illicit mind altering drugs recreationally are legal or illegal, taking such drugs violates God’s Laws against doing anything to harm the human body. Even if marijuana were legal for recreational use, unless it was controlled through doctor’s prescriptions, people would be abusing it and then going on to the really powerful drugs. To entertain the philosophy that “we might as well legalize it because people will do it anyway” is to say that we might as well legalize murder because people will do it anyway. Legalizing marijuana isn’t the answer. The answer is a good Christian education for our young people. Through Christian education people can get their “high” from Christ and they won’t need illegal drugs of any kind.

war is not good because people do get killed, innocent civilians do die, but after 9/11 the game has ghanged for the worst. i guess you want to be like al gore who wanted to plant trees for each victim of 9/11 instead of going to war, we were attacked on sept. 11, 2001......do you remember that??? stupid

Sorry about your injury, get well soon.

Ken - Oh, I'm beginning to understand now. Sounds like you've had a bit to much “high” from Christ, and may have somewhat of a fried brain yourself. We’re all sinners. I guess you want to choose your sins and dictate by law which sins others might choose. You want to compare murder to the enhancement of euphoria? What a stretch! There are plenty of legal activities that are also considered sin. I’m Sure Your sins are All legal (like that somehow makes a difference). Legalizing marijuana might not be THE answer, I’m just asking might it be a better answer than the War on drugs we’ve been fighting, financially supporting, and losing for how many years now? Maybe a google search on Bush Drunk Youtube might be enlightening. Nice chattin' wit'ya.

You see the problem Ken? You expressed your opinion about why you feel legalizing marijuana is not good and have now gotten a post saying you have gotten too much of a high from Christ, you "may have somewhat of a fried brain", that you want to choose your sins, and Bush Drunk Youtube. Those are some big leaps from what I can see with only one eye!!!

I have re-read your post and don't see how the leaps could possibly come in but maybe I am missing something?

Alcohol kills more people than pot does so why not bring back prohibition? Alcohol is a mind altering drug so ask yourself why pot is illegal but alcohol isn't, could it have anything to do with the revenue we get from the drug cartels to look the other way? If pot was govt sanctioned like alcohol, then the price would drop significantly. Just a thought!

Thanks Fred for your support. Lipstick seems to worship the god of Secular Humanism and the “if it feels right to you at the time, do it” mind-set. Like all good little disciples of Humanism, what God said is of no consequence. Lipstick, either deliberately or out of ignorance, utterly misses the point of my post. Instead he/she gives the convoluted rational of the Godless for doing whatever feels good. The fact of the matter is that God said DON’T DO IT and a good foundation in Christian doctrine is the best answer.

To answer the question, “might legalization be a better answer than the war on drugs we’ve been fighting and financially supporting”? No, as I said before, legalization is not the answer. The answer is a Christian education, which would acknowledge that there is a God superior to man. Unfortunately, Lipstick embraces the Secular Humanistic Philosophy that we are all little gods unto ourselves and therefore have nobody to answer to.

Good morning Sparrow. You are right about Romans 13 and in that light it makes no difference whether smoking pot is legal or not. God said that the human body is “the temple of the Holy Spirit” and that we should do nothing to harm it (1 Cor 6:18-20) that includes smoking pot.

There are many things we do to harm our bodies on a regular basis and give no thought to it, so why single out pot. Heck, we can even go so far as to say that watching the news is mind altering, so I advocate not watching the news anymore.

    Good morning Sparrow.

Sparrow, I don’t smoke pot or cigarettes and no I don’t eat at McDonalds. As a matter of fact I try to be careful what I eat because it is a matter of not only pleasing God but a matter of good health. You accuse me of saying that “God said that the human body is the temple of the Holy Spirit” and that we should do nothing to harm it. I did not say that. The magic word here is God. God said that the human body is the temple of the Holy Spirit”. God, not I, also told us how to behave. Your argument is with God, not with me.

We cannot avoid all foods that may or may not be good for us but we can eat well while avoiding McDonalds and other sources of junk food. And we certainly can refrain from pot or any other illicit drugs. You seem to be prone to bring God down to man’s level and then try to understand Him by applying human reasoning. Doesn’t work. You would do well to bring yourself up to God’s level and His Word and His reasoning but I think you know that already.

One of the things I have a problem with concerning pot is, when California made it legal for medicinal use, the Feds overstepped their authority and started arresting growers. People are going to smoke whether the state criminalizes it or not. Surprisingly enough, Massachusetts just had a referendum and it was voted to decriminalize pot so now it is considered a misdemeanor, now here's the kicker, since there is still a penalty for it, it is still a crime in that state and hasn't been decriminalized at all. If you only use if for yourself and don't sell it, it's another one of those victimless crimes, if there's no victim, where's the crime. It's a vice just like prostitution, where's the victim in prostitution, but yet it's still a crime.

We have to look at the laws as human laws otherwise we would have to build more prisons. Everyone of us disobey God's law every day in one way or another, you can't pick and choose which ones you obey.

Sparrow, you are still attempting to bring God down to human level. It makes no difference what the State or Fed law says, GOD said don’t smoke a joint. Since the State and Fed governments use man’s reasoning concerning pot, it might probably be best if all laws concerning pot were abolished, simply because people will do what they want to do concerning pot, anyway. Those trying to live life according to God’s Laws will still refrain from using pot. Those who are not troubled by God’s Laws will continue to do as they please. You may be splitting hairs with the victimless crime thing. You ask “if there's no victim, where's the crime”? The victim is the one smoking the pot and the crime is in disobeying God.

You say that “most of the laws on the books are against God's law”. We would probably agree or disagree on the laws that fell into that category. I agree that all laws coming from government are man’s laws. BUT, the men making those laws are obligated by God to form laws based upon God’s Laws. We know that they don’t. They base their laws on man’s reasoning. The bottom line is that if a Christian refuses to obey a civil law because it is diametrically opposed to God’s Law he must do so and suffer the consequences.

I'll say right up front, I am not a Bible scholar so I really don't care to get too involved in religious discussions.

This country was founded on God's law, (referenced in James)the Law of Liberty, that has since been so perverted that very few laws are based on God's law, but God advises us to obey our rulers. So are we to obey those laws that aren't His laws because He tells us to obey our rulers? Are you willing to suffer the consequences of not obeying the ungodly laws?

    Ken (Anonymous) says...

Sparrow, in James 1:25 and in James 2:12 the perfect law of liberty refers to God’s Law. The word “perfect” is the clue. Only God’s Law is perfect.

“But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man shall be blessed in what he does” (James 1:25-26).

“So speak and so act, as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty” (James 2:12).

God requires us to obey His Laws to the best of our ability. God allowing civil governments to rule His people goes back to the Old Testament when He appointed King Saul when the people indicated they wanted to be ruled by an earthly king instead of being ruled by God. And of course we have suffered the consequences ever since. However, that being said, as a Christian I know that my duty to God would be to obey Him in all things and that includes when civil law is in conflict with His Law. If that time should ever come I only hope that I can take that step of Faith necessary to put God first.

Religion aside, I have a very practical view as to why we should not legalize pot. We have enough people driving while intoxicated as it is. Legalization of pot would result in greater usage and more instances of people driving while under the influence of the drug. As with alcohol, smoking pot affects a persons judgement.

It's dangerous enough on the highway now, let's not do something that could make it worse.
