Willie says: Willie voted. Sure hope you made me proud and did too.

Willie,

I am calling to complain about pharmacies that are constantly running out of medicine, so that when you get a prescription filled they tell you they either don’t have it in stock or they can only give you a partial fill. I understand that a pharmacy occasionally runs out of supply, but this has happened to me several times in a one-year period! Some days, I’ve shown up only to be told that they do not even have a pharmacist on duty at all! Someone needs to look in to the management. From now on I’ll take my business elsewhere.

Willie says:

There's plenty of competition among drug stores. I'm sure you'll find one that can meet your needs. Used to be there was a gas station on every corner, and then it became a convenience store. Now it's a drug store. I guess that says something about our society these days.

Willie,

Please report on the unfinished construction on Hwy. 188, near the entrance to Hospice House. There are two large apartments/condos left unfinished and weeds growing to invite reckless people to break windows, kick in doors and an ugly eyesore for the corner of Old Walhalla Hwy. and Hwy. 188. Please report who owns the site and what plans they have to complete this project.

Willie says:

It's private property but the deed holder could be determined by going to the register of deeds office and looking up the plat. These are tough times and a lot of builders and developers have been caught short, with projects in the works and the economy crumbling. It's pretty hard to blame someone who can't find any money to borrow right now or a bank who will lend it.

Willie's inclined to give the guy a little more time. I'm sure he would love to finish the project and start making some money on it.

Willie,

I’d like to know what they are building on that cleared off area of land on Hwy. 123 between Clemson and Seneca. One long shopping center?

Willie says:

The owner hasn't offered any specifics but the plan is to build a retail development. We'll find out more as this one moves ahead.

Willie,

We would like everyone to know that the Democratic Party and Democratic voters in Oconee County have placed over 800 Obama/Biden yard signs on our private property and alongside our highways. Most all of these signs have been stolen, even from our front lawns. This message is to the Republicans and others who are stealing our yard signs. Democracy relies on respect for freedom of expression and pride in your political candidates. Since you obviously don’t have pride in your candidates, you are stealing our signs. Republicans are showing themselves as non-law abiding citizens — from George Bush and Dick Chaney right down to the thieves in Oconee County. You are a disgrace to us all.

And …

Willie,

Having had friends in the Democratic Party all of my life, I’m finding a new class of Democrats in this campaign. I’ve never had yard signs torn down on my own property before. I guess they only want personal freedom to extend to people that agree with them. How sad!

Willie says:

From the sound of things, we have yard sign thieves on both sides of the fence. Disgusting.

Willie,

A lot of things amaze me! All of God’s creation amazes me! The thing that amazes me most is people who put up monuments, signs and other public notices and mispell (SIC) the words. For instance, the monument at COURTENAY cemetary. There it is for the whole county to see (COURTNEY MEMORIAL CEMETARY)! What is wrong with checking the spelling of a Family name? It can’t be that hard or is it called lazy, stupid and don’t give a rip. Wake up, people!

Willie says:

I totally agree that extra care needs to be taken to spell correctly, especially on anything that will be seen by the public. But, sometimes it is easy to make a mistake (like you did in your letter in which you misspelled “mispell” (misspell) and “cemetery” (cemetery). So, I try to have sympathy and understanding and correct people gently. Willie’s made more than his share of mistakes, and I promise to continue to make ’em. Not that I’m gonna try. I’m just human, that’s all.

Willie,

Where can people go to get financial assistance for electric/water bills? I have an elderly neighbor who is worried because he cannot pay his utilities and is worried they may get cut off. He is unemployed and also a veteran. Surely, there is some help out there.

Willie says:

There are some options. As a veteran, he should call the veteran’s office and see if they can help. That number is (864) 638-4231. He could also try the Dept. of Social Services (864-638-4400) and see if there is any funding available for utility payments. Many times, when other funding sources have dried up, there are some federal funds available to help with heat and other utilities. Finally, you might try Oconee AID, which is part of the United Way program. If you call 2-1-1, you can get more information on numbers and possible assistance programs.

Willie,

As I understand from reading your paper’s report, Treasurer Nowell was given a check made out to him personally. Will she cut a check to me also? Also, the way I understand it, the post office will not accept a third party check, only a check made out to the postmaster. Was some kind of policy violated here by the post office? Just seems to be some sloppy business goes on in our county offices from time to time. Perhaps our grand jury could look into this matter. Isn’t that what they do?

Willie says:

Not sure what grand things a grand jury does, but Willie's thinking this would be a big waste of our tax dollars. The story I read said the check was made out to Nowell as the treasurer. That doesn't sound too strange to me. As for post office protocol, if someone presents a county check, odds are pretty good it isn't going to bounce. I'd take it. How about you?

Willie,

This is my second attempt to ask you this question. I have heard rumors that Walhalla High School and Tamassee Salem High School are going to be combining. I have heard that the school board has bought property on Hwy. 11 to build the school. As a parent of a child that this would impact, I would love to know the answer so that the rumors can stop. Please help!

Willie says:

Please let this go! For the umpteenth time, Tamassee Salem High School is not going to be closed or merged. IT'S NOT HAPPENING!! It's a rumor and nothing else.

Willie,

Where does all the negativity end? The issue with the Walhalla employee getting terminated is a personnel matter in itself. Can Willie see that this is a disgruntled employee wanting to blame everyone but himself? I hope that the Daily Journal has enough class to seek out both sides of the story before anything else is printed. True facts must be stated, don’t you think? To me, as a reader of your column every day, this is a childish act by the terminated employee or whoever is doing this.

Willie says:

My contacts at the paper have said that, if the employee comes forward, both sides of the issue will be presented. Willie suspects this is all about change. Some people have a real hard time with it. Trouble is, change is everywhere and all the time. Those who don’t learn to be flexible, will break.

Willie,

My comment goes to the guy in West Union who hid out in the barn. First of all, think of all the money wasted to search for him. Second, think of all the time that Sheriff’s Department, rescue workers and volunteers spent away from their own families to look for this guy. These volunteers were under immense stress, so therefore their families suffered because of this man.

Should he not be charged for this? Seems like the “runaway bride” was charged?

Willie says:

For sure, a lot of good people's time and money was wasted. Willie heard that the United Way, which is already stretched for cash, served hundreds of meals to searchers. Someone should be held accountable, but that's not always the way it works. Same goes for unsafe boaters, wild-eyed kayakers who don't know the water they are on, hikers who don't own a compass … we spend lots of public money on all these things.

Willie,

I do not understand when a man is injured in an accident and he was a volunteer fireman for over 20 years, where is the department when he needs help?

Willie says:

Sure would hope they would be there for him, especially if he was injured on the job. My experience tells me most of these volunteer departments take pretty good care of their own.

Lindsey Graham, quit wasting time and get back to work for SC. It would have been nice to find a more qualified and liberal senator for SC. Been following McCain (and GW Bush) around like a little, lost puppy but, wouldn't come close to meeting the qualifications for the new White House dog.

Now, now, folks, don't be so hard on Senator del Grahamnesty. Sure, he's been following McCain close enough to be his shadow, on his heels like a faithful puppy instead of spending time in the Senate. But maybe he was there just in case McCain needed luggage carried, shoes shined, doors opened, etc. I've been afraid McCain would stop walking abruptly and Grahamnesty would break his nose crashing into the back of McCain's head. Then again, maybe Grahamnesty needed all this time with him to discuss his next amnesty legislation attempt. Or maybe there were hopes for a cabinet appointment or a seat on the Supreme Court. Oh well......

I think there was a lot of racism built into this presidential race but not the way you might think. CNN has posted Exit Polls. Makes for very enlightening reading. Still think a lot of folks voted for the wrong reasons this time. Experience aside, Obama has the potential to do great things. I just hope he does.

Slavery also had an effect; names such as Williams, Jackson, Harris, Davis, Brown, and Jones are common among African Americans-- supports your theory.
since slaves tended to be given, or adopt, their owners' surnames."-- negates your theory.
As an example, if mountainman had chosen Blasingame or Kilpatrick you might have had a point, but not as is. In my personal experience, I know more white Jones' and Williams' than black. the other two names seem more common in the black community in our area, from my experience anyway.

I’ve never been under a rock and as for “somewhere else”; you seem to be the one with the “SHARE THE WEALTH” problem. That’s where US is headed. If you don’t like it, you're free to leave (once Obama takes over you may have to abandon your wealth at the border). I see you’ve already been scoping out Iran and Lybia, I hear Cuba’s about to have some newly vacated property as well. Avoid the rush; leave now while you still can take your wealth with you. Best of luck & Have Fun, I'll keep an eye on SC for you.

I hope the good vibes from yesterday are not already falling to the curb. We all want our country to be successful, so even if you didn't want Obama to be president, you should want his leadership to succeed. However, it is the right and responsibility of citizens to question our leaders. I am a Obama supporter, but we need criticism from the conservatives. If it proves to be a valid point, then it will only help our nation be stronger. For those who are opposed to democratic leadership...it is now your job to prevent democratic abuse of power.

I can't believe what I just heard on the news .... this bailout that was passed, which I was against and one of our senators, Jim DeMint, voted against it, as many as the taxpayers were, not only gives this money to banks, etc but with no stipulations as to how they have to use it!!!!!!! And, now it seems that we the taxpayers have to pay for the legal fees to defend Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae!!!!!! Pelosi at this moment is sitting with car corporations who want another $25 Billion!!!!!!!!!

I am ready to take my pitchforks to Washington!

daltry, fredatwork, somethingstinks, odj, Ken , I voiced my congratulations, admiration for John McCain, and expectations for our tax-dollar paid representatives to get back to the work we pay them to do (I'm sure they'd rather vacation now). All obviously my opinion, mixed with truth. I did no name calling. daltrey addressed me and posted "nasty much?" This is basically nothing but name calling. To her and all her supporters of this mindset, I have to ask; Is this, the type of action driven by the values you've learned in Sunday-school? I must have missed that lesson. Do you talk to your preacher(s) with that mouth? Looks like more notches in the Bible Belt to me. Maybe it's just that, y'all just need to "give it a rest". odj, if you're going to quote my words, please don't misquote them... It completely changes the meaning.

Fred, I said before the election that we needed a Republican President to counter Democrats Pelosi and dingy Harry with his veto. But instead we have a Dem Congress and a Dem President. This is a prescription for a runaway spendthrift Democratic Congress to take the American people to the cleaners and “you aint seen nothing yet”.

Time will tell MyTake ... We do now have Democrats in the White House, Congress and House in majority control. Pelosi and Reid just yesterday had meetings to give another $25 Billion or our tax money away. Want to pass another stimulus package and considering a bill to tax our 401K plans - all of this in the news and done by your beloved Democrats. You say Republicans spent all the money?? So no dems ever did any earmarks? You need to do your research, and again, it has been the dems in control since 2006. Yes we are in great debt but obviously that doesn't stop Pelosi and Reid. I am praying that Obama stops it though.

    Here were your words:

"Avoid the rush; leave now while you still can take your wealth with you."

My daughter got to go because of her grandmother who passed away right before the trip - we encouraged her to go since it was something her grandmother wanted her to see that part of the world and she enjoyed every minute of it!

Fred, you, me and the rest of the serious posters can avoid snipping if we ignore the snipers. Not all liberals are misinformed, but if we ignore the ones that are just looking for an argument we can still turn over that new leaf and deal in fact or considered opinion, without innuendo, and the same old false accusations.
